Church Gates Bed and Breakfast

Enjoy the relaxed and informal atmosphere of our beautiful historic house in the heart of the Kent and Sussex Weald, overlooking the pretty churchyard in Cranbrook. Tastefully furnished with antiques, the interior of this listed building was once the town bakery and features a host of inglenook fireplaces, beams and panelling. Although fully centrally heated, roaring log fires add to the cosy atmosphere in the cooler months.

Comfort and style

We have one twin/king sized double guest room with en-suite bathroom and a kingsized guest bedroom with shared shower room. Our rooms are comfortably furnished with armchairs, tea and coffee making facilities and colour TV. Traditional English Breakfast is freshly made with local produce. We also offer Canadian Pancakes with Maple Syrup and continental and vegetarian options on request.

Historic Cranbrook

Cranbrook is Kent’s smallest town, described here by Vita Sackville West, the author and creator of Sissinghurst Garden

“…I may allow myself to add a word in praise of Cranbrook, dominated as it is by its old windmill, its really beautiful church and church-yard planted with magnolias and flowering trees … its air of busy peace on a shopping day. I have often thought that if I wanted to show an over-seas visitor a sample of a small and very English country town, I need not go further afield than my three mile distant Cranbrook, with its legacy of history behind it”

Cranbrook Today

Today the little town of Cranbrook with its pretty weatherboard houses and historic windmill -still working and open to the public- provides a good selection of restaurants and cafes, traditional pubs, shops and banks making it an ideal base to discover the wealth of gardens, castles, historic houses and beautiful countryside of the Weald – designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town and countryside provide ideal country walks. Church Gates itself is on the High Weald Landscape Trail.

Fabulous gardens, historic houses and castles to visit: The superb and internationally renowned garden at Sissinghurst (left) is just three miles away and makes an inspirational day out. Equally stunning is the flamboyant Great Dixter.

Great Dixter Garden

“A friend and I recently decided to take advantage of the lovely weather and go to see Christopher Lloyd's remarkable garden at Great Dixter. As we also wanted to see  Vita Sackville-West's famous gardens at Sissinghurst some overnight accommodation was required.  I can tell you, should you find yourself in similar circumstances, that Church Gates, in the pretty Kentish town of Cranbrook is absolutely unbeatable.”

FELICITY HILL

Other beautiful gardens and parks include Marle Place, Pashley Manor, Merriments, Scotney Castle, Bedgebury National Pinetum, Yalding Organic Gardens, Sheffield Park, Iden Croft Herb Garden and Stoneacre. Known as ‘the most beautiful castle in England’ Leeds Castle, together with Penshurst Place, Hever Castle, Bodiam Castle, Bateman’s, Chartwell, Knole, Ightam Mote, Finchcocks and many other historic attractions make for an enjoyable visit.

What a treat, an establishment that really does believe the customer is always right!  Not that we felt like customers really.  It's quite difficult to get the balance right between being a guest and a customer but I would say that Church Gates have hit exactly the right note’
